How are they made?
We rent "beam time" on a 5 million volt particle accelerator. The accelerator charges the interior of polished clear acrylic specimens to 1 - 2.2 million volts! We then (carefully!) discharge them to create a miniature lightning storm inside the specimens. The lightning-like discharges cause countless fractures that form branching chains wherever the original discharges previously occured within the acrylic. The following video clips were captured during some of our irradiation sessions. Why do we make Lichtenberg Figures? We were intrigued by the incredible beauty and the physics of Lichtenberg Figures but were continually frustrated by their scarcity. So we decided to begin conducting our own research into the underlying theory so that we could better understand the physics and (hopefully) develop improved techniques for creating them. However, since accelerator "beam time" and raw materials are quite expensive, we decided to offer some of our specimens to the general public in order to help fund our research. During each new experimental run, we "push the envelope", trying to create larger or more complex figures, or to better understand the physical processes that create the figures. Specimens from our latest production runs represent the current state of the art for 2D and 3D acrylic figures - we are proud that many of our specimens are truly World Class in beauty and size. We now offer over 40 styles of Lichtenberg Figures ranging in size from affordable 2" x 2" x 3/4" blocks, a wide selection of medium and larger sized specimens, and museum quality 12" x 16" x 1" specimens for discriminating collectors and institutions, and even larger specimens. Every Lichtenberg Figure ships with a one-page explanationabout what it is and how it was created. Since most of our figures were recently created, the acrylic may have an amber hue, called solarization. Solarization is produced by complex interactions between the electron beam and the acrylic, and it usually fades with time. The fading process can be accelerated by applying gentle heat or by putting your figure in warm sunlight. Display: Many of the images on our site were taken using lighting conditions which highlighted the delicate internal patterns. Similar, or even more spectacular, results can be obtained by actively lighting the figures with white or multi-colored Light Emitting Diodes (LED's), or by placing figures in the path of sunlight or bright incandescent lighting. The reflected light from the tiny mirror-like fractures makes the internal Lichtenberg figure glow brightly. We also offer a variety of standard and custom LED light bases for most of our figures. As with snowflakes, every Lichtenberg figure is unique. Although your figure may differ from the examples shown on our web site, we guarantee it will be of similar or better quality. Some specimens may have a small fracture at, or near, the exit point of the discharge - this is a natural consequence of the high energy discharge process. By adding suitably engraved or lettered metal plaques to our bases, Lichtenberg Figures can become memorable gifts or unique academic, corporate or retirement awards. We also offer custom laser engraving for most of our larger sculptures. Captured Lightning sculptures can be prominently displayed as treasured works of scientific art that enhance the decor of any room or executive suite. Style 18A "Tesla's
Lightning" - Tesla's name writted with letters of lightning in a unique
4" x 12" x 1/2" specimen. These Style 18A figures are somewhat
longer than our previous Style 18 figures and they come with polished
edges. By using lead masks we were able to selectively
charge only selected regions of the acrylic to form letters. This
allowed us to
literally "write"
Tesla's name in lightning. We also carry a beautiful black anodized brushed aluminum light base with white LED's

second" specimens that may have a relatively small (1/8" - 1/2")
fracture or chip at the "root" of the discharge, some have
self-discharged and show some charring from beam current being diverted
through the figure. While less than "perfect", they are still beautiful
and unique specimens. Currently

measured a dramatic 13 1/2" x 17 3/4", and are supplied

| BD752MC Battery Powered Multicolor Light Base This
compact color changing light base measures 2.25" x 2.25" x 1.13". It uses a
0.5" x 0.5" array of 4 high intensity color LED's to slowly cycle
through a variety
of
colors. As the colored LED's continually color cycle, they illuminate different portions
of the figure above. The base has an attractive black matte finish. It
uses three "AAA" batteries (not included) and comes
with a handy ON/OFF switch. Colors cycle over a period of about 15
seconds. When powered by
alkaline cells, estimated
battery life is about 40 hours.

Medium Power Multicolor or White Light Base This

BD754W Low Profile White LED Light Base This
sleek light base has a brushed aluminum exterior and an square
array of four "cool white" LED's that lend a slightly bluish cast. This
very low profile base measures 2" x 2" and is a slim 3/8" thick. The
array of four bright white LED's is
approximately 0.8" on each side. The LED's brilliantly illuminates
smaller
3D figures. It looks especially good with our 3D Lightning Cubed
specimens (Styles 1,
2, and 22 ) and our Ball Lightning spheres. Supplied with a 120 volt AC

These
bases have bright "warm white" LED's housed in a genuine rosewood
base with a beautiful "piano" finish. As with fine furniture, the deep finish uses at least 10 coats of high gloss lacquer. The top is slightly
recessed, with a shallow 2" or 3" square black felt-covered cavity that
is ideal for gently

LM2750, LM2750BPL, LM2752, and GAB1212L
These
bases use a row of bright "warm white" LED's to fully illuminate
our 4", 6", or 12" wide by 1/2" thick Captured Lightning® sculptures.
The 4" and 6" bases are made from genuine
rosewood with a beautiful high gloss finish consisting of at least 10 coats of lacquer.
The 4" base is also available in a similar high gloss black finish. The 12"
base is beautiful brushed aluminum with black anodized finish.
Your Captured Lightning sculpture
is held snugly within a felt lined cavity. The front surface is flat for an optional brass plaque to create a custom award.
The rosewood bases are 1.25" high. The LM2750 and LM2750BPL measure 2.5"
x 6.5" (for 4" x 1/2" sculptures). The LM2752 measures 2.5"
x 8.5" (for 6" x 1/2" sculptures). The GAB1212L measures 2" high

2. If you are a US customer and plan to pay using a check or money order, please
email or call me (+1
630-964-2699) so that I can reserve your selections. In fairness to
other customers, I can only reserve figures for 10 days pending
payment. I'll need to know which styles and quantities you want,
discharge preferences, your planned payment method, and your shipping
address. Lichtenberg figures are sold on a first come, first served basis.
If you contact me via email, I'll usually get back to you within 24
hours with a quote.
3. International Lichtenberg Figure orders require us to add a
surcharge of USD $7.00 to reflect higher shipping costs. In rare cases we may need to request additional funds to cover larger items or larger orders.
4.
Our
inventory of Lichtenberg Figures is limited, and not
all styles or discharge configurations may be in stock at any given
time. We can supply larger quantities of most styles with an 8 week
lead time, and we can also make custom figures. Please call us (+1 630-964-2699) to discuss your requirements.
5. Dealers Please Note:
We offer quantity discounts (by Lichtenberg Figure style and lighted base style) per the following quantity discount schedule. However, please contact us (+1 630-964-2699) BEFORE placing your order so that we may provide you with a custom quote, reserve your specimens, and confirm that we can meet your quantities and timeframes. Note: our current shopping cart software only applies single quantity pricing and WILL NOT apply the following quantity discounts to your order. Large orders may require a 75 day lead-time so that we can procure and irradiate new material.
Payment Options: B. International Customers:
We suggest that our international customers use the Shopping Cart whenever possible to make credit card or PayPal payments. However, PLEASE remember to add the International Surcharge by clicking the International surcharge button ONCE (in the black box above) to add a $7.00 charge per Lichtenberg Figures order. I can also directly accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express purchases for customers with custom requirements or for customers who do not feel comfortable using the online shopping cart and credit card process. In these cases, please contact me at +1-630-964-2699 or email me. I can also send customers a PayPal invoice, and I can accept payment via a MoneyGram. We also accept bank Wire Transfers, however, a USD$10 service charge will be applied to your order. Shipping and Insurance:
Shipping and Handling costs shown in the Lichtenberg Galleries reflect single figure shipment to destinations within the US. Our shopping cart software combines shipping for multiple items to reduce your overall shipping costs. Our International Surcharge will usually cover any additional shipping costs except for large items or large orders. Insurance is recommended for costlier figures shipped within the USA, and will be charged at US Postal Service rates. Illinois residents will be charged 7.75% Retail Sales Tax unless the customer can provide us with a Tax Exemption number. For these situations, please contact us directly before placing your order.
Our Satisfaction Guarantee:
We want our customers to be delighted with their purchases. You have a 14 day inspection period after
receiving your item(s). If, for any reason, you are not satisfied,
please contact us, either via email or at our business number
(630-964-2699) and let us know whether you'd like a replacement or a
refund. Then return the item(s) to us in the same condition, using USPS
delivery confirmation. Once we have received the item(s) in good
condition, we'll either replace the item or refund your original
purchase price (including original S&H).
